💡The Quick Answer

Burnt cheese on your stone? DON'T use soap! Here is the correct way to clean it.

The Answer

Never use soap or water on a pizza stone. Porous ceramic absorbs moisture (causing cracks when heated) and chemicals (making your next pizza taste like Fairy Liquid).

The Method: Heat is Your Friend

1. Burn it Off

The easiest way to clean a stone is to leave it in the oven at max temperature for 30-60 minutes. The intense heat turns burnt food and grease into white ash. This is the pyrolytic cleaning effect.

2. Brush it Down

Once cooled completely (wait at least 2 hours), use a wire brush or a specific pizza stone brush to sweep away the ash.

3. Scraping Stubborn Bits

If there are still chunks of burnt cheese, use a metal scraper or spatula. Do this gently to avoid gouging the stone.

What If It's Stained?

Stains are normal. A well-loved pizza stone will turn black over time. This is "seasoning" and doesn't affect performance or hygiene. Embrace the dark stone.

What Not To Do

  • NO Soap: Ever.
  • NO Water: Unless absolute emergency, and then dry for 24h before heating.
  • NO Oil: You don't season it like cast iron.

Summary

Heat, Cool, Brush. That's it!
